ULTRASOUND ELASTOMETRY IN PATIENTS WITH ACUTE PANCREATITIS AND DIABETES MELLITUS (ORIGINAL ARTICLE)

Abstract

Ultrasound study allows for quick and accurate assessment of pancreas. Two parameters are used for ultrasound characteristic of morphological change in pancreatic parenchyma: total echogenicity and a distribution pattern of reflected echo signals. It is widely known that an increase of echogenicity in pancreatic parenchyma along with an emergence of uneven distribution of echo signals, that possess a diffusive distribution patterns, may characterize age related changes and be a manifestation of a disease. Two of the most common pancreatic diseases that are characterized by identical diffusive changes in the structure of the parenchyma are acute pancreatitis and diabetes mellitus. However, stiffness indicators observed in patients with diabetes mellitus and acute pancreatitis are different - 5.1+ 1.7 and 9.1 +4.1 respectively. Differences in that level of the compared groups are statistically significant (p<0.05), as calculated using Mann-Whitney U test.
